Estate Planning Pitfalls To Avoid
Do you have an estate plan in place but wonder if you have selected the right people to advocate for you when you’re no longer able or around? Or have you procrastinated in getting your plan in place because you haven’t decided who your successor agents will be? Are you concerned if your estate plan will carry out your intended wishes and protect your beneficiaries?
We are often asked to review existing estate plans and are shocked by the number of individuals whose selected agents or documents are likely to create or cause more problems than they solve.
On Thursday, July 2nd at 2:00pm, we’re hosting a webinar and giving 30 individuals the opportunity to talk directly with, and get insight from, the founder who built Santa Barbara Fiduciary into a trusted fiduciary firm and her esteemed colleague Barbara Liss, an expert estate planning paralegal.
My name is Lindsay Leonard, T.E.P., P.F., and when I started Santa Barbara Fiduciary in 2009, I had just finished my own personal journey caring for, and losing, my grandmother- my rock, my best friend and mentor. Taking care of her was an emotional ride, fraught with challenges, mistakes and exhaustion. I was constantly afraid of litigation stemming from a dysfunctional family, felt like I was having to re-invent the wheel and was regularly trampled on. Thankfully, I survived all my challenges, and now I want to give back by delivering efficient and quality oriented systems and services to clients and their loved ones navigating this stage of life.
At our webinar, Barbara and I will be addressing two common estate planning pitfalls we see way too often:
- family member fiduciaries and
- springing powers of attorney
You’ll learn (at least) three reasons why having a family member act as trustee might not be a good idea, and how having a non-family private professional fiduciary can be an excellent choice to ensure efficient implementation and harmonious transitions, while reducing the burden on loved ones.
You’ll also learn the problems with springing powers of attorney, including unnecessary delays, expenses, legal, and privacy issues.
You will leave with actionable knowledge on how to protect your wishes and family from unnecessary challenges.
There is no cost to attend but you must register and space is limited to the first 30 registrants. It is recommended that spouses attend together, but the information applies equally to unmarried people, as well. Feel free to invite friends, too.
