Did you know 64% of American adults don’t have a will, including 55% of those with children? As you read that statistic, I bet you’re telling yourself it’s time to write my will. But end-of-life planning is more than that. There are questions that you need to answer and other documents that need to be prepared, including health care and general arrangements. Having a plan ready is for your benefit and for the benefit of your loved ones. Losing someone is very difficult and not knowing what they want adds additional stress in an emotional time. In our day and age of technology, apps and websites are providing services, for all ages, to assist in end-of-life planning. Now it is time to ask yourself, are you prepared?
Now don’t be alarmed, if getting your estate plan finalized by the end of the year isn’t realistic for you. We recently came across this article by Everplan, that provides guidance on how to write a “just-in-case” letter (in ten minutes!). Your “just-in-case” letter can keep it’s place until you’ve completed your formal documents. We recommend thinking of who you are writing the letter for as a motivation for checking it off your list.
